Secret Rites of Passage
22" x 28" x 2.75" (closed) - 2006 - Acrylic on wood and masonite
22" x 48" x 2.75" (open)

Crypto Jews were obliged to participate in the Catholic rites of their community and in every way hide their true
beliefs.  We see a marriage in front of an altar that appears in the desert like a mirage.

When the doors are opened the
secret is revealed, and we see the same family celebrating the wedding according to Jewish custom and law.
The water trickling from the tiled fountain on the right panel becomes a river in the desert, implying the dissolution of the boundaries between geologic, historical and personal time.

This is what appears when the doors are opened.
