Crypto-Jew
Series
The very year
Columbus sailed for the Americas Spain issued an edict expelling the
Jews from Spain.
The Spanish Diaspora thickly seeded the Americas with Jewish families
from Argentina to New Mexico.
Disguised as
Catholic converts to escape the dreaded Inquisition they carried on
their Judaic traditions in secret for so many
generations that some modern descendants have forgotten why - but
even now they still light the candles.
The story of the Crypto Jews has captured the imagination of Jews
and Gentiles alike, stimulated considerable
writing and art; it has provoked discussion in rabbinic circles and
provoked controversy. And for some it has
been a personal homecoming, for others an identity crisis.
All the paintings are very detailed, the lace, the bones in the fingers,
the vegetation, making the fantastic look real. |
