| This painting belongs
to the artist’s cousin Rose Pacheco, who is seated at the table
with her pet rabbit in her arms. Her pet goat is looking
in the window, revealing a view of Taos Mountain. The
artist is standing behind her, toasting the tamales that they
have made. They modestly claim to make the best in the
world, 1,000 at a time. To her right is “El “Tamalero”,
Rose’s son Jake, now a grown man. But Rose requested the
artist paint him from a long-ago photograph, taken when he was
so cute and would still fold 300 tamales an hour jut to hang
out and hear them gossip.
In the room behind you can see Rose and me building the adobe
fireplace that still stands in her house.
The angel is removing all the cholesterol from the tamales because
Rose has very high cholesterol.
